W2 Day 1 - Setting the scene

This week the teams are coming back together in Brussels, for a five day intensive workshop, IPHEL2. Day one kicked off at the World trade/transformation Centre. Here we were welcomed by Roeland Dudal of Architecture Workroom Brussels (AW)-– a European think-and-do tank for innovation in the field of architecture and urban and regional development. He talked about the building and  introduced the ‘You Are Here’ - a programme of exhibitions, urban debates and work sessions as part of International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR–2018+2020–THE MISSING LINK). 

 

The IPHEL 2 aims to support the participants to:

1. Revise and refine the shared vocabulary and set of concepts developed during IPHEL1 that address issues of migration in local urban areas, according to DESINC partner progress on project deliverables.

 

2. In order to support the emergent needs of marginal groups, familiarise further with methods, tools and narratives that emphasise the agency of migrants and their experience of / contribution to city-making.

 

3. Share and analyse experiences in the field of engaged urban practice, action-learning and knowledge co-production, in order to create meaningful learning programmes and environments addressing questions of migration and inclusion in the field of architecture, urban design, and urban planning.

 

4. Examine a number of CSO-driven approaches for the welcoming of migrants in local urban areas, in order to distil lessons from these but also develop pedagogical tools that can match the learning and training needs of students, educators and CSOs in this field. 

 

5.Advance the development of pedagogical principles and approaches, by engaging in discussion in an interdisciplinary environment, and advance further in the systematic evaluation of current curriculum design and teaching/training practices which can lead to a shared approach across DESINC partners.

 

 

Each team presented an update on their own work and how they are working towards the overall project’s intellectual outputs. The SSoA and ASF-International team talked about the development of their teaching and learning review which records the current teaching activities surrounding refugees and international migrants taking place in the top 50 Architecture and Design Universities in Europe. These also included future plans to potentially test bed two teaching activities in the next year. Afterwards, the team from Politecnico di Milano discussed the development of their MOOC framework which focuses on action learning research methods and methodologies. The KU Leuven and Housing Europe team discussed the challenges civil societies face, and consequently new learning needs they have. These led to an overall team discussion on how the individual strands of the project can interlink together. 

 

Finally, the different teams reviewed the IPHEL1 notes to see how their thoughts on defining inclusion and the pedagogical framework have developed since last workshop in Sheffield.
